Son of Daniel and Elizabeth Mackenzie, was born at Springfield, Dundee, Scotland, Mar.12,1795. He came to Canada in 1820, where he became a shopkeeper in York, Dundee, and later Queenston. In 1824 he founded the Colonial Advocate, a political Journal. In 1828 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada; expelled for "a libel constituting a breach of the privileges of this House" in 1831; re-elected and expelled five times.
